4 Biggest Skincare Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

When it comes to the biggest skin care mistakes it’s often less about what you’re not doing, and more a problem with what you are doing.

Skin is a very particular thing.  It’s vital that you take the right measures to preserve its quality and texture.  Since skin is one of the biggest telltale indications of how old you are, it’s in your best interest to treat it with tender loving care.

Whether you’ve never had a skincare routine before, or you’re looking to improve your current routine, here are some of the most important things to look out for.

Overspending On Expensive Products

Often consumers believe that spending more on something means they’re getting a superior product. However, this isn’t always the case.   You can easily buy something at the drugstore for a fraction of the price you would buy at an expensive cosmetics counter.

Making your own products is also an option. While DIY isn’t always recommended for everything you put on your face, masks are easily created yourself.   You can make your own mask out of a few simple ingredients.

Not only can a DIY face mask be just as high in quality as a store bought one, but it’s often even better.

Using a Harsh Exfoliant

Exfoliating is vital in order to rid the skin of everything it absorbs on a daily basis.  Between makeup, pollution, and everything else that you are exposed to throughout the day, it’s essential to start with a fresh slate.

One of the most dangerous myths about skin care is that you must exfoliate your skin with a harsh scrub.  Unfortunately, this isn’t good for your skin. A rough texture creates tiny abrasions on the skin making it susceptible to irritation and infection.

Instead, use a gentle powder exfoliant or a liquid chemical exfoliant.

Skipping SPF

Many people think that applying an SPF is only necessary if you’re in the hot direct sunlight.  However, even in overcast weather, your skin can get damaged.

Always apply an SPF of 25 or higher when going outside.  This is especially important if you have anti-aging products which contain AHA or retinol.

Sleeping in Makeup

It’s understandable that sometimes you’re exhausted at the end of a long day.  It’s easy to crawl into bed and fall asleep without washing your face first. However, when you fail to wash your makeup off, you’re not doing your skin any favors.

You should wash off anything on your face that will clog your pores.  Your skin will thank you for it. It will be more radiant with a much better texture. Over time, your skin will be much better off by cleaning it every day.
